Homework Guidelines

Fammatre Homework Guidelines

Homework is an important part of a child’s educational program.  It provides a means of practicing necessary skills of independent study and learning outside the classroom.  It helps promote good study habits and encourages students to share classroom experiences with parents.

Parents:

Parents can support a child’s interest in lifelong learning by providing an environment at home in which homework is a priority

  • Please provide a quiet, well-lit space for students to do their homework.
  • Help your child budget time throughout the week.
  • Encourage your child as they independently do their work.
  • Be sure you understand the assignment, and ask your teacher if you need help understanding the assignment.
  • Set aside a regular time to do homework, and study in a quiet place.
  • Complete your work to your personal best, and hand it in when it is due.

Students:

It is important to develop good study habits at school and at home.

Homework Times:

Fammatre students are expected to read each night.  Times will vary by grade level.  The maximum amounts of minutes that children should actively focus on homework assignments are suggested as follows*:

·         Kindergarten: 20 minutes of reading a book and chat with a proficient reader

·         First Grade: 10 minutes (plus nightly reading)

·         Second Grade: 20 minutes (plus nightly reading)

·         Third Grade: 30 minutes (plus nightly reading)

·         Fourth Grade: 40 minutes (plus nightly reading)

·         Fifth Grade: 50 minutes (plus nightly reading)

*The National PTA, NEA, and Department of Education recommendations fall in line with general guidelines suggested by researcher Harris Cooper: 10-20 minutes per night in the first grade, and an additional 10 minutes per grade level thereafter.
